Right wingers including Marjorie Taylor Greene, Kevin McCarthy, Lose it over Donald Trump’s Target Letter

Republicans were fired up on Tuesday after Donald Trump revealed that he had received a letter containing “TERRIFYING NEWS”—that he may be the target of DOJ Special Counsel Jack Smith on January 6th.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) asked for any possible charges “phony” and “false” speaking to reporters on Tuesday, suggesting that the investigation is purely political given that Trump “won the Republican primary.”

“Is this where our country is now? Because it’s an embarrassment on the world stage,” she said. “If this is the direction in which global America is going, we are worse than Russia. We are worse than China. “

“It’s scary,” Greene continued. “I cannot believe that our country has to endure this. I will stand with President Trump all the way.”

Greene said in another interview: “Yes, it’s complete bullshit, that’s my response. This is the only way the Democrats have to beat President Trump.”

Trump is still sweeping his GOP competition in the polls, and his recent indictments don’t seem to be swaying his voter base in any meaningful way. Indeed, his command of consensus No. 2 Ron DeSantis grew directly after his federal indictment last month.

“I think it showed how he was in the White House and didn’t do anything while he was going on,” DeSantis said Tuesday in his first answer. “We want to be in a situation where you don’t have one side but always trying to put the other side in jail.”

Like Greene, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) accused the Biden administration Giving the government a “weapon” to squash Trump’s poll numbers – despite previous investigations and subsequent indictments failing to do so.

“Recently, President Trump went up in the polls and was actually overtaking President Biden for re-election,” McCarthy said Tuesday. “So what do they do now? The arms of the government go after its opponent number one. It is now and again.”

Even Mike Pence—who has sometimes been squeamish about criticizing Trump, but has done so from time to time—has said he hopes the probe will not lead to an indictment of his former boss.

“I am not sure that the president is acting on the bad advice from a group of crank lawyers who entered the White House in the days before January 6 is really criminal,” Penny said. “I don’t know what the letter means today, the announcement means, but I hope that the judgment about the President’s actions on January 6th would be left to the American people.”

Trump faces numerous other investigations into his conduct in the White House and beyond. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr. is being prosecuted for hush money payments to Stormy Daniels in 2016. Another indictment could come against the former president in the coming weeks over his 2021 phone call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, in which the former president. attempt to pressure Raffensperger to “find him votes” to win the state in the 2020 presidential election.
