However, the next episode is set to be a cosmic one and will likely expand on the Skrull franchise introduced in the first film and continued in the Secret Invasion TV series.

The sequel to the 2019 Captain Marvel movie was first announced back in January 2020.

The Marvels cast: Who is there?

Of course, Brie Larson returns as Captain Marvel herself. However, she will be joined by Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau who first appeared in WandaVision.

After being affected by Wanda’s powers, Monica Rambeau was shown to have some kind of cosmic ability. This idea will likely be explored further in the film. We’ll also see the MCU debut of Parasite star Park Seo-joon, who fans believe could be playing Yan, the Prince of Aladna – although this has yet to be confirmed. However, said executive producer Mary Livanos Entertainment Weekly in July he will play “ally to Carol.”

For the camera, four writers are behind the script of the sequel: Megan McDonnell of WandaVision, the director of the film Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik of Loki, and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’s Zeb Wells.

The Marvels plot: What about it?

Brie Larson is set to return as Captain Marvel.

An official synopsis for the upcoming The Marvels movie has been released.

It says: “Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and exacted revenge on the Supreme Being. But with unintended consequences Carol finds the burden of the destabilized universe.

“When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole involving a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with Jersey City superfan Kamala Khan or Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s niece, Captain Monica Rambeau, who are estranged. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn how to work together to save the universe as ‘The Marvels’.”

Furthermore, the biggest indication of what the film will actually focus on is thanks to the final scene of the TV series Ms. Marvel.

In the final moments of the show, the bangle Kamala Khan wears – which she apparently gets her powers from – begins to glow brightly before she is thrown back into a pile of clothes. Instead of Khan getting off the hook, it’s revealed to be Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers who looks very confused as she realizes her surroundings.

With WandaVision teasing that Monica Rambeau is upset that Carol Danvers was no longer there to help look after her mother, Maria Rambeau, their relationship will likely be a source of tension and narrative focus in this sequel.
