  • Residuals are royalties earned when a TV show or movie is screened after its initial release.

“This Is Us” star Mandy Moore has revealed she once found a “penny” in leftovers from the hit show.

Hollywood actors in the SAG-AFTRA union are currently hit in part because of how streaming has affected residuals, which are royalties earned when a TV show or movie is screened again. after its initial release.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on the picket line outside the Disney lot, Moore, previously nominated for an Emmy for her lead role in the drama, said that actors can’t live off leftovers anymore.

Moore said that while the show has been placed on streaming services like Hulu, she has only received “very little, like 81-cent checks.”

“I was talking to my business manager who said he’s got a penny and two pence left over,” she said.

She continued: “The residual issue is a big one. We’re very lucky as working actors to have been on shows that have been hugely successful in one way or another … from leftovers or at least pay their bills.”

“Scandal” star Katie Lowes, who was also on the picket line, told the publication that she has not received a significant residual from the show’s streaming deals with Netflix and Hulu.

“If you’re someone who’s been lucky enough to do over 120 episodes of a successful show in previous years — 10, 15, 20 years ago — that rerun is what could sustain you for years. I did this smaller project or I wanted to do a play or you’ve got kids and you’ve got a family to provide for,” Lowes said. “And that’s just to make it happen more. The whole model has changed.”

Several other Hollywood actors have come forward to criticizing the waste system amid the SAG-AFTRA strike, which started last Friday.

“Orange Is the New Black” star Kimiko Glenn reshared a A TikTok video she posted for the first time in 2020, in which she showed a letter informing her of all the residuals she received for appearing in 44 episodes of “OITNB.” The total was $27.37.

Kamil McFadden, also one of the main actors on Disney Channel’s “KC Undercover”. tweeted a video showing that he made minuscule figures in leftovers from several episodes of the hit show.

“Want to see something crazy? Have you ever seen negative amounts on your residuals? The entire video is almost two minutes long and I’m only netting $2.77. Math is not math,” he wrote in the tweet.
