Mortal Kombat fans hate Ermac’s design in MK1

Mortal Kombat fans seem to unanimously hate Ermac’s new design Mortal Kombat 1 gamewith many arguing that it is a huge downgrade from its practically unusable design Mortal Kombat 11 game.

Ed Boon promised that Mortal Kombat 1 would have a big presence at San Diego Comic-Con and he wasn’t kidding. Not only did we get a new story trailer that showed Tanya, Baraka, and Li Mei on the game’s initial roster (along with Goro and Darrius as Kameos), but we also got confirmation of the game’s first Kombat Pack, which features Homelander, Omni-Man, Peacemaker, Takeda, Quan Chi, and Ermac, confirming the earlier Amazon leak.

The reception to this Kombat Pack has been overwhelmingly positive, but there is one aspect that not everyone is happy with – Ermac’s design. We only got to see a bit of him in an area with extremely bright lighting, so some judgment will be reserved until the full game, but this version of Ermac has no mask at all, leaving his strange dehydrated mummy face on full display. Even going from the skull, Ermac has a really simplistic outfit in Mortal Kombat 1 that doesn’t really do justice to his original designs.

It’s a very different take on what we’ve seen of Ermac before, with no prominent red color, mask, and even any bandages, which are a staple of his character. All of these things come together for Ermac’s design which is getting a lot of hate from fans across social media, with comparisons being made to a range of other characters, including the Collector, the dried-up grandmother from SpongeBoband even Craig Halo Infinitefor some reason.

One popular post on the Mortal Kombat subreddit by Redditor Shahradwayne clearly shows why everyone is unhappy with the design – Mortal Kombat 11 was right there with the perfect one. As fans of Ermac will know, he failed to make any appearances in Mortal Kombat 11, appearing only in a cutscene in the game’s Krypt mode. Even then, he was given a unique design specifically for that look, one that combines elements of all his designs and one that looks uniquely Ermac.

Shahradwayne calls the suit’s progression from Mortal Kombat 11 to Mortal Kombat 1 the “biggest downgrade ever” and many fans seem to agree. Even worse is that Mortal Kombat 1 seems to have no gear systems this whole time, which means that, barring DLC or alternate costumes, players will be stuck with Ermac’s dehydrated Paul-looking design here.
