Historic Motel from the 1950s in Glasnamart reopens with Contemporary Trust

The motel revival is upon us, and another historic resort has undergone a significant renovation

Silver Sands Motel and Beach Bungalows just finished a year-long renovation in Glenna Mart, on Long Island’s North Fork. Lifelong friends Alexander Perros and Ryan Hardy painstakingly renovated the iconic 1950s waterfront property. The duo used the philosophy of responsible development, taking into account the sensitive and diverse ecosystem that surrounds Silver Sands. The natural elements of the property informed every detail, from the service and offerings to the furniture, color palette, and garden design.

Silver Sands is located at the end of a wooded road on 1,400 feet of private beach facing Shelter Island. Silver Sands’ summer opening includes 20 motel rooms, as well as 13 bungalows and beach houses (1-to-5 bedrooms) with lush native landscaping, as well as optional private outdoor gardens, screened-in porches, decks and outdoor showers, opening later this year.

All guest rooms are air-conditioned and offer free Wi-Fi, as well as luxe Matouk bath towels, Kassatex linens, Ligne Particulier linen baths and more amenities. Birdwatching binoculars are included with selected rooms. All motel rooms are equipped with a lounge area and spacious bathrooms. All the rooms in the east wing have private gated gardens that look out onto the salt marsh. Pets are welcome, with an additional cleaning fee.

Silver Stands strives to have a small carbon footprint, using only organic and fair trade products. The all-electric property has eliminated any ties to fossil fuels, oil and natural gas as part of its commitment to sustainability.

On the property, guests can enjoy a bocce court, and an oyster farm managed by Oysterponds Shellfish Co. Off-site tours include boating, fishing, aquaculture and farm tours, wine tours, water sports and more. Guests also have access to Vela bikes to cycle around town.

Chef Hardy, known for Manhattan’s Charlie Bird and Pasquale Jones oversees the property’s food and beverage outlets. On weekends, guests can enjoy Cookouts at the Boathouse, including wood oven fired Neapolitan pizza, fresh seafood, local farm produce and Pipes Coves Oysters plucked from the water daily. A lobby bar, snack bar, oyster bar and restaurant are also due to open on site soon.

Silver Sands will be open all year round. During peak season, motel rooms start at $595 per night; beach shacks start at $645 – $745 per night; and bungalows starting at $500 – $875 per night. Off-season, motel rooms start at $450 per night; beach shacks start at $600 – $700 per night; and bungalows starting at $475 – $780 per night.
