Frelick On Fire – NBC Sports

Rotoworld’s brand new Pickups of the Day column is designed to help fantasy managers find a handful of widely available targets during the offseason. He could be a breakout candidate, a stash prospect, an injury replacement, a pitcher with a favorable matchup or week, a player with better luck, or any other situation. If there’s value to be found on the waiver wire, we’ll find it and take it. Today’s edition features an intriguing top prospect coming to Milwaukee and a top streaming option for fantasy managers coming for a tasty matchup against a struggling Royals team.

Sal Frelick, OF, Brewers
Available in 75 percent of Yahoo series

The Brewers finally summoned their top prospect to the majors before Saturday’s competition against the sizzling-hot Braves, and he wound up making an immediate impact for Milwaukee, going 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI, and also made some dazzling defensive plays in the right field. He continued that performance during Sunday’s series finale when he reached base in two four plate appearances and scored a run. The 23-year-old rookie is only on the roster in a quarter of Yahoo’s leagues going into Monday’s game against the upstart Reds, meaning fantasy managers in shallow mixed leagues still have a chance to pluck him off the waiver wire. He has excelled at every level of the minor leagues during his rise to the majors, and has drawn enough power to hit double-digit homers, despite a strong approach in the opposite field. His biggest strength in fantasy will be his on-base skills, along with his plus speed and base running skills. He doesn’t project as a fantasy superstar right away, but he’s the kind of all-around talent that could make an impact in the standard five rotisserie categories going forward. He has a chance to blossom into an elite fantasy player in the future, if he develops additional pop over the fence, and is also stealing 15-20 bases per year. He’s the prototypical high-floor, low-ceiling fantasy outfielder who can be a solid starter, but he’s unlikely to become a top-tier contributor without some tweaks to his blocked ball profile.

Logan Allen, SP, Guardians
Available in 60 percent of Yahoo series

Allen is in line for Monday’s heavily favored game against the last-place Royals and remains available on the waiver wire in more than half of Yahoo’s fantasy leagues. The 24-year-old right-hander has appeared in this space often this season, and deserves another mention after tossing five shutout innings last Tuesday against the Pirates in his first Major League outing since June 28. He posted eight strikeouts and didn’t give up a free pass over five stiff frames. There is some reason for the confusion here as his average fastball velocity was about two miles per hour slower last week than it has been this season, which reduces his margin for error, and increases the risk in his profile. However, he is coming for a great matchup against the Royals’ lineup that has 29 steps in runs scored this season, hardly ahead of the floundering athletics. He’s too tasty of a matchup to ignore for streaming purposes, but fantasy managers should keep a close eye on his fastball velocity in this outing.
