Now that Lionel Messi has made his debut at Inter Miami following his stunning late goal in Inter’s 2-1 win over Cruz Azul in the League Cup, attention has turned to when Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup winner could make his full debut. Herons boss Tata Martino has already confirmed that Messi will lead the team after Gregore’s injury and few can claim to have as much experience as Messi. The 36-year-old will have to wait for his official Major League Soccer debut but there is more action to come before then and silverware to aim for too.

League Cup

Although it may not have been the most prestigious competition, the League Cup holds significant value for Messi and Miami as success at this level guarantees an anchor for the CONCACAF Champions Cup. As continental competition through MLS will be difficult as Inter are dead in the overall table at the moment, the League Cup is even more important. With one win on the board and another home game coming up against him Martino’s former Atlanta United teamA continued run from the round of 32 would be a big boost and could add games to Messi’s slate between now and August 20.

Major league soccer game

That’s when Messi is expected to make his big MLS debut against Charlotte in Fort Lauderdale with Christian Lattanzio’s side one of the teams Messi and Martino will be eyeing as they plan to rise through the standings. Games in hand will help some teams before Miami, but the points on the board in large quantities will be the only thing that will carry this team towards the perimeter and a possible continental berth.

US Open Cup semi-final

While not worth action for the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the US Open Cup is a shot at immediate silverware for Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. Martino Miami need to get into the habit of winning if they are to aim for MLS Cup success during Messi’s time on the pitch with the club and a win at this level coupled with the quality of continental action through the League Cup may be Inter’s best case scenario in terms of what can be salvaged from the rest of this campaign. Cincinnati is not an easy draw, but if Miami treats domestic cups with the respect they deserve, they could advance to the finals and be on the verge of silverware.

First MLS away game

Second only to Messi’s MLS debut will be his first road game in the United States with the New York Red Bulls as opponents and Miami traveling to New Jersey. It is likely to be an eye-opening experience for Argentina given the amount of travel involved in state soccer and there is already huge demand for the game as well as any game that could feature the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain man. NYRB are also one of the teams that Messi and his new team-mates should be looking to chase down in the coming weeks and so three points against them could see that achieved.
