VUMC sued after turning over trans health records to AG

Two patients have sued Vanderbilt University Medical Center, alleging that the hospital’s decision to turn over detailed patient records at the behest of the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office had caused them significant distress in a “climate of hostility” toward transgender people in the state.

The plaintiffs, who filed under pseudonyms, allege that Vanderbilt was negligent and failed to honor its patient contract by turning over a series of patient records without filing a legal challenge against Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti’s office.

Last fall Skrmetti’s office deployed a legal tool called a civil investigative demand, which does not require a court signature, to force Vanderbilt to turn over a specific list of patient records, The Tennessean first reported last month.
