I have a love-hate relationship with straightening my hair. While I’d love to wear ultra-straight silky locks on a regular basis, it’s usually not worth the time and effort it takes to achieve this look. Not only does it require a blow dryer, roller brush, straightener, heat protection products, and an abundance of time and patience to make my hair unruly, I know I have to be willing to put my hair through the wringer to walk out with salon quality results. That’s why I almost gave up straightening my hair a few years back. I was just crunched for time; I was tired of having dry, crunchy hair – but thanks to some much-needed creative innovation from Dyson, I’m no longer nervous about using a flat iron on my locks.

Dyson recently debuted its latest innovative hair care tool: the air stripsuccessor to the Dyson Super Sonic Hair Dryer, the beloved Dyson Airwrap, and the Corral, the brand’s original hair straightener. The IS air strip dries and straightens your hair at the same time without heat damage. Instead of relying on sizzling hot heat plates that inevitably cook your hair at temperatures over 400F, the air strip it uses high pressure airflow to create straight, wow-worthy hair that lasts for me.

The IS air strip Straightener works in two modes: wet hair or dry hair. Although you can use the Airstrip on dry hair just fine, it’s best to use the straightener in the way it was specifically designed for: transforming wet hair into a sleek, straight style. The straightener has several other notable settings on its sleek LCD screen: temperature control (up to 285F), low and high speed settings, cool shot mode, and the power button. The IS air strip it also operates a nifty self-cleaning cycle when powered on, a cool feature I’ve never seen in another hair tool.

Dyson Airstrait Wet to Dry Hair Straightener

I started using the air strip by clipping my towel-dried hair with a bit of heat protection cream and slowly working the straightener down through my hair. Although it would be great for the air strip to dry and straighten your hair in one pass, I had to go through about three or four passes per section to get straight, fully dry hair. This didn’t take much time though and I was impressed with how straight, smooth and shiny my hair was within minutes. What would normally take me 45 minutes to an hour to dry and straighten my hair with a blow dryer and straightener, it only took about 20 minutes to make it sleek, shiny with just the air strip. It’s a big time saver.

I’ve only noticed a few potential problems with the air strip. First, you cannot fully access your roots with the tool. Because the AirStrip’s drying and straightening airflow comes from the bottom blade, you can straighten a small portion of your roots. Dyson recommends drying your roots with the Airstrait to start, but is this extra step a solution? Not for me. I didn’t have a problem with this because my hair is only wavy and there weren’t too many bumps or noticeable frizz towards the roots. But those with curly, textured hair may have a different experience, getting a completely straight look by using air strip.

When other straighteners can also be used to create curls and waves, the air strip it is very much a straightener in the way it is designed. That’s not a problem, of course, if you just want to achieve straight hair, but it’s something to consider before investing air strip since you won’t be able to change it to a curling iron as well.

How much more can we ask for a product that is already a modern solution to achieve dry and straight hair together in one hair healthy tool? It’s an innovative, multi-purpose solution to the straight, healthy hair you’ve been looking for, and for me, it’s worth the $500 price tag.
