Ed Boon Teases Mortal Kombat 1 Cosmetics

More Mortal Kombat 1 news will be shared at EVO next week, giving us further details on the new fighting game ahead of its launch on September 14. While Ed Boon hasn’t told us what to expect from the next reveal, there’s a good chance it will be in relation to the game’s customising options – an important feature that is yet to be explained.

This hint comes from a Q&A that Boon held on Twitter, giving us some indication of what will be announced soon. Here, Boon responded to users specifically asking about the customise options by telling them to “wait and see”. Given that this is the same Q&A that Boon used to tell us about the upcoming EVO reveals, it’s possible that he’s hinting that more will be explained there, letting us see if gear from Mortal Kombat 11 is making a return.

In his Twitter Q&A, many fans took the opportunity to try and get more details about Mortal Kombat 1 out of Boon. While he was, as always, pretty cryptic, Boon choosing to reply to the questions about character customisation could be a hint at what will be revealed at EVO.

Specifically, he replied to questions regarding whether MK1’s cosmetics will be more like MKX or MK11, since they had pretty different ways of changing a fighter’s appearance. MK11 actually faced some criticism from fans, who said that the gear system gave them way too many cosmetic changes, accusing the devs of favouring quantity over quality.

With this in mind, it’s understandable that fans are eager to know if MK1 is mixing things up, going for something new rather than bringing gear back. The fact that this isn’t something Boon wants to share over Twitter may suggest that it will be part of a big, glossy reveal – just like we got at San Diego Comic-Con recently. This would point to a pretty significant overhaul, so not just doing what the last game did.

Mortal Kombat has a rich library of skins to pull from, and admittedly, MK11’s offerings would make few top 10 lists. With this new game already pulling from older titles in other departments, hopefully, it will do the same with its alternate costumes, because the 3D era had some pure bangers. Who knows? Maybe NetherRealm will finally give us another Kreate-a-Fighter? C’mon, Liu Kang is a god now, so it wouldn’t be too wild to have our own creation running around Outworld. Street Fighter 6 did it, so there’s no excuse.
