Invincible creator Robert Kirkman confirmed that a character who fans only saw for a split second during the show’s first season will return for season 2 and have a much bigger role in the future – Shapesmith.

Kirkman revealed that Shapesmith, who shifted himself into the image of the astronaut the Sequids overtook on Mars, will be more prominently involved in Invincible season 2. Kirkman believes that because of the Martian’s role in the graphic novel, Shapesmith can be a valuable addition to the show, though he didn’t give many additional details.

Kirkman revealed the full details about Shapesmith’s expanded role on the show when asked who will be Invincible season 2’s standout character with Collider. “I can’t say who plays him because it’s a reveal later, but for season two, the character is Shapesmith. I think Shapesmith was a fun character in the comic, and he brought a cool dynamic, and the way he affected the larger Martian storyline was very interesting. But the actor whom I almost just named does so much with him and brings so much to the character. It is just absolutely amazing.” The Invincible season 2 teaser trailer revealed plenty of big names joining the cast, though it did not specify who would play what role.

This will not be the first time the Invincible Universe will have a Martian on Earth, as Martian Man was part of the original Guardians of the Globe. Although Shapesmith had the same body makeup as Martian Man, it’s clear they don’t have the same powers since Martian Man’s superpower was his elasticity while Shapesmith’s power is, well, it’s pretty self-explanatory what he can do. While he was a hero in the comic, fans don’t know what kind of role he’ll have next to Invincible and the surrounding heroes.

There’s going to be many subplots going on in season 2. There will be so many to the point where Invincible season 2 will go on hiatus midseason so that viewers can fully take in everything that happens. While Shapesmith appears to be a factor, his story will likely be a smaller cog of the bigger picture. At the same time, fans had their favorite characters from last season, like Debbie and Robot, for their compelling story arcs. There’s always room for another one, especially since Invincible was one of the surprise hit shows in 2021 that will be coming in with much long-awaited hype for season 2.

There’s plenty of potential for what Shapesmith could do too. With his ability to take the form of anyone he pleases, fans will see who he could pose as. Maybe he will pose as the new Donald after he died while trying to stop Omni-Man from his killing spree. Perhaps his DNA as a shapeshifter could pave the way to train Mark to fight against multiple villains should a possible threat emerge. Whatever his role is, Kirkman clearly can’t wait for fans to see what he can do.

Invincible season 2 will start airing new episodes on November 3, 2023.
