Backroads Unveils New Family Dolce Tempo Trips

Backroads has long been a leader and an innovator in the world of adventure travel. They’ve also been at the forefront of change, keeping tabs on fluctuating demographics and traveler demands. Back in 2020, during the heart of the pandemic, they first offered softer adventure trips called Dolce Tempo, or “sweet time,” as in “take your sweet time.” These were walking, E-bike, and multi-adventure trips designed for first-time adventure travelers and those looking for an easier option than regular Backroads trips. Call them easygoing active vacations designed with more downtime built-in. They were active adventures but at a more relaxed pace. They were clearly on to something because all the trips quickly sold out. They continued to do so even as the offerings expanded to include Active Ocean & River Cruises.

Now they’ve unveiled Dolce Tempo Easygoing Active Tours for Families with Teenage and Older Adult Kids. These are E-Bike, multi-adventure, and walking tours in Croatia, Italy, Maine, Spain, and Switzerland, among other destinations. This time, the message is simple: bring the kids along.

These tours feature the identical well-designed itineraries of other Backroads active adventures but at a slower pace with much more downtime to enjoy the pool, explore local towns, and generally slow down in a given destination. These trips also offer families of different physical abilities and ages to explore together and share the experience with other families in similar life stages.

“We know that families love to be active together whether it’s biking, walking or other fun adventures, but they also love spending time by the pool, checking out the local culture and just unwinding on their own schedule,” said Backroads Founder and CEO, Tom Hale. “Our Dolce Tempo trips have been a huge hit with adults of all ages, and we know that these new tours for families with teens and young adults hit just the right balance of active exploration and downtime.”

The new Dolce Tempo Easygoing Family Walking Tours include “Iceland’s Glaciers & Coast Easygoing Multi-Adventure Tour – For Families with Older Teens & 20s,” a six-day trip with accommodations in premier hotels. It includes a family hike in Vatnajökull National Park, visiting the seabird sanctuary in the secluded Cape of Ingólfshöfdi, a glacier walk in Skaftafell National Park, a ferry to the Westman Islands, and a walk to the heart of the Hengill geothermal before ending in Reykjavík. The price is $6,599 per person (as are all prices mentioned here). For those who are new to E-Bikes, the “Santa Barbara to Ojai Easygoing E-bike Tour – For Families with 20s & Beyond” is a six-day trip through Santa Barbara wine country, a ride alongside the Pacific Ocean and a chance to explore the Ojai Valley Trail. From $4,499, with accommodation in premier hotels.

Other new Dolce Tempo Family Trips in Europe include “A Taste of Camino de Santiago Easygoing Walking Tour,” “Netherlands and Belgium Easygoing Bike Tour,” “Cinque Terre & Tuscany Easygoing Walking Tour,” “Santorini & Crete Easygoing Multi-Adventure Tour,” and “Switzerland Easygoing Multi-Adventure Tour.” For domestic destinations, they’ve added “Maine’s Acadia Easygoing Multi-Adventure Tour,” “Utah’s Bryce & Zion Easygoing Multi-Adventure Tour,” and “California’s Yosemite Easygoing Walking Tour.” Visit Backroads for more information.
