James Gunn Clears Up Justice League Animated Movie DCU Confusion

  • James Gunn clarified that the upcoming animated film Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths is not part of his DC Universe.
  • The confusion about what is canon to the DCU and what isn’t has led to a lot of questions from fans.
  • Fans will be disappointed that Crisis on Infinite Earths is not connected to the DCU, but there will be theatrical animated films for the DCU in the future.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths confused some fans when it was announced. However, James Gunn addressed whether or not the animated film was a part of his upcoming DC Universe.

Gunn and Peter Safran have used The Flash to reboot the DCEU into the new and upcoming DCU. Some actors will return to play their characters, or at least new versions of their characters, while others are being recast entirely. There will also be an animated series, Creature Commandos, which will be canon to the DCU and have the voice actors play live-action DC Universe roles. This has led to confusion about what is canon to the DCU and what isn’t. Luckily for fans, Gunn has been active on social media, answering these questions to help clear up confusion.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery and DC announced they will produce an animated movie called Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths, adapted from the comics of the same name. When it was announced, it was labeled as a “DC Universe Movie,” which prompted fans to wonder if it was connected to the live-action DCU. A fan asked Gunn on Threads, “Is the new Crisis animated feature that’s coming out soon a part of your DCU in the same way Creature Commandos will be?” Gunn replied short and sweetly, “Nope.”

The thread compared the animated Justice League movie to Watchmen, with the latter labeled as a “DC Animated Movie” rather than a “DC Universe Movie.” This spurred some more questions from fans. One fan asked why it was called a DCU movie, and Gunn said it was a mistake that has since been corrected. Another fan asked, “Can we expect theatrical animated projects for the universe in the future or nah?” Gunn once again replied short and sweet with a “Yes”

Fans hoping for the Crisis on Infinite Earths to be connected to the DCU will be disappointed with this news, but it is probably for the best. Crisis on Infinite Earths is a huge comic book event with many characters that haven’t been cast in Gunn’s DCU. It wouldn’t make sense to make this movie before those castings if they want to have actors appear in live-action and animated DC features.

There is some good news for fans, as Gunn did confirm that there will be theatrical animated films for the DCU. With the recent success of non-Disney animated movies such as Spider-Man: Across Spider-Verse, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Puss in Boots, and the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it would make sense for Gunn to find a good story for a DCU animated film.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths will be released in 2024.
