Baldur’s Gate 3 Is Already In Steam’s Top Five Most Played

Baldur’s Gate 3’s launch out of early access is finally here, and despite it only being available for less than 24 hours at the time of writing, it’s already managed to muscle its way into Steam’s top five most played games.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s incredible success was first shared by Larian Studios’ director of PR and communications Molly Carroll, who captured the moment the game entered the top five. Take a trip to SteamDB’s charts overview, and you’ll notice that the game has actually climbed since then too, as Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently sat in third place with a 24-hour peak player count of over 400,000 and rising. At this rate, it could potentially take Dota 2’s place in second, which currently has a player count of just over 480,000.

With those numbers, you probably won’t be surprised to hear that the game is also sitting at the top of Steam’s best sellers list as well. In fact, so many people having been trying to play or download Baldur’s Gate 3 that it’s caused a spike in Steam outages for a number of people. As you can see from the graph down below shared by Larian’s director of publishing Michael Douse, a huge spike in cases occured right when Baldur’s Gate 3 launched at 4PM. It may have even broken Twitch as well.

You don’t need to be Sherlock Holmes to understand that those are some pretty impressive numbers, especially when you consider a fairly niche RPG series is like Baldur’s Gate 3 is going toe to toe with some of Steam’s biggest multiplayer titles like Rust and Dota 2. There’s also the fact that a lot of people will probably still be waiting for that 122GB day one download to finish before they can jump in, meaning we’ll probably see the game’s peak player count rise continously throughout the day.

It’s certainly nice to see though, especially considering how much passion Larian Studios has for its craft and how many industry standards the game itself bucks. While the game’s eventual PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X releases will probably struggle to amass a player count big enough to match these incredibly strong numbers on PC, it’s safe to say that Baldur’s Gate 3 is already a huge win for Larian and will no doubt go down as the studio’s most successful game it’s ever produced.
