Cheap, Rugged And Fast, Crucial X6 2TB Portable SSD

Earlier this year, I reviewed the Western Digital Elements SE, a tiny and inexpensive portable SSD that satisfied my need for cheap storage. Even though a drive like this is really meant for casual data storage–not archival data–some people have been spooked by recent reports of WD external SSDs suffering from data corruption issues. While the Elements SE drive doesn’t seem to be caught up in this developing mess, it’s understandable that you might want a different option until the company gets that sorted out. So I bought a competing drive from Crucial that looks virtually identical to the Digital Elements SE in appearance.

In fact, this Crucial X6 2TB portable SSD was even cheaper than the WD model, and comes with a much faster USB 3.2 Gen-2 USB-C interface.

A Tiny, Inexpensive Portable SSD

The Crucial X6 2TB portable SSD would be very easy to mistake for that WD Elements SE drive at a quick glance. They’re both thin, black plastic squares with rounded edges that would easily fit in the palm of a hand or slip into a pocket. The Crucial X6 is not quite a perfect square (2.52 x 2.72 inches) and it is slightly thicker and heavier than the WD drive. The Crucial X6 has a USB-C port instead of USB Micro-B, which is a big win. However, you’d be hard-pressed to tell them apart without a close look.

The other advantage the X6 has is price. Its MSRP of $109.99 undercuts the competition by $10. Even better, I picked one up on sale for $90. That’s a steal for a name-brand, 2TB SSD.

Zippy Data Transfer Speeds

When I copied 1GB files from a 13-inch MacBook Pro to the WD Elements SE drive, it would take about 5 seconds. That was fine for casual use, but faster is always better when it comes to transferring data. In testing, the Crucial X6 SSD–with its USB-C port and USB 3.2 Gen-2 support–would copy the same 1GB file in about 1 second.

Being fragile is a negative with a portable drive that might get knocked around a bit during transport. Any SSD is better than a hard drive with its moving parts, but this one is designed to do better than average. Crucial says the X6 is tested to survive a 6.5-foot drop and is also shock, vibration and extreme temperature resistant.

Crucial X6 SSD Key Specs:

  • 2TB capacity as tested (also available in 500GB, 1TB, and 4TB capacities)
  • USB 3.2 Gen-2 (USB-C)
  • Maximum connection speed 10Gbps, maximum sequential read speed 800MBps
  • 2.72 x 2.52 x 0.43-inches, weighs 1.48 ounces
  • Limited 3-year warranty
  • MSRP $109.99

All of the features of the Crucial X6 2TB SSD have to be taken in context of its very inexpensive $109.99 price.

It’s small, zippy and rugged–for a portable SSD in that price range. There are smaller option, much more rugged options and far faster options. But you’ll pay for those. If you are looking for a pocketable SSD that will hold plenty of data for casual use or “sneaker-netting” the Crucial X6 2TB SSD is a winner. Even more so if you can pick it up on sale.
